Professional Development

Professional development courses are short-term classes intended for students who want to gain general knowledge, learn a new skill, upgrade existing skills, or develop personal interests.

  Building Energy Performance
The course will cover energy performance of buildings, building shells, HVAC, electrical and other building systems. Presentations will also include analysis and evaluation of building performance, energy efficiency, environmental quality, first costs, and operating costs. Discussions will also focus on strategies to exceed energy code requirements through ASHRAE Standard 90.1.
  Fundamental Skills and Knowledge of Cost Engineering
Learn or review the basic knowledge required for certification as a cost engineer or cost consultant. Fundamental Skills and Knowledge of Cost Engineering by correspondence is a self-paced, structured method to prepare for the certification exam.  Registration Fee: $500 per person. After successful completion of the course, you will receive 7.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
     
    Fundamentals of Engineering Exam Review
Are you taking the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam by NCEES?  Thermodynamics can be a challenging topic in the exam.  Need some help preparing?  The College of Engineering and Engineering-LAS Online has some help for you.  We just launched a ”FREE” Online Thermodynamics Review Course for the FE Exam.  The course is free for ISU students and alumni.  It was prepared with the assistance of Matt Hagge, Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering and Thermodynamics instructor.
     
  Introduction to Wind Energy
Basic introduction to the fundamentals of Wind Energy and Wind Energy conversion systems. Topics include but not limited to various types of wind energy conversion systems and the aerodynamics, blade and tower structural loads, kinematics of the blades and meteorology. 
 
  Information Security and Identity Theft Policy
Professionals in the insurance, law enforcement, financial services, education, healthcare, and other industries need to be trained and certified in information security to meet federal and state best practices. This short Internet class provides professionals with the necessary security and Identity theft awareness training and awards a certificate upon successful completion. The class is very user friendly guiding the students through each module to completion at their own pace. We have included video clips and other visual material to make the class interesting as well as practical.
Registration fee per student for this course is $69 including a book. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) coming soon.
     
LEED for Contractors Workshop
Originally, this course was offered as a face-to-face workshop as part of the approved course list by the USGBC Credential Maintenance Program for credit toward LEED Professional Credential Maintenance, but has now been repackaged as a completely online course. The instructor, Brad Perkins, is a certified member of the USGBC and has met all prerequisites to teach this workshop for credit towards the LEED Professional Credential Maintenance. The workshop covers all of the credits and prerequisites that a contractor needs to know for estimating, scheduling, planning, and management. 
LEED for New Construction
This course will prepare you for LEED 2009 for new construction, Green Building Certificate, and exam process.
Registration fee per student for this course will be $420 per person. After successful completion of the course, you will receive 15 PDH Credit Hours and 1.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
  Life Cycle Assessment Fundamentals
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) has become a leading environmental assessment technique used by consumers, industry, and government. LCA is increasingly required by firms that wish to green their supply chain; LCA is part of the LEED “green building” certification, and life cycle results are now required by Federal renewable fuels legislation through the Revised Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS2). You will learn how LCAs are performed and how to interpret the results of such studies.
  (NIOSH) Lifting Equation
Low Back Injury Prevention and the (NIOSH) Lifting Equation.
Registration fee per student for this course will be $175 per person. After successful completion of the course, you will receive .5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).
